Speech Delay Activities: Games to Encourage Talking

This article is general information. For diagnosis and treatment, please consult specialists such as a paediatrician, child psychiatrist or speech and language therapist.

Speech delay activities can support a toddler's language at home, but they do not replace an assessment. If you are asking what to do about a late talker, start with your paediatrician and, if advised, a speech and language therapist, because only an assessment shows the reason behind a delay.

Language development varies a lot. Some children talk early and some late, and late talking is often not a problem. Still, a check of hearing and development is the safest way to ease worry. What follows is general information, not a diagnosis.

When to talk to a specialist

Every child develops differently, but do not just wait if any of these apply:

This list is short and general; specialists decide the actual thresholds.

Everyday habits that support language

  1. Narrate: "Now we put on socks. Look, a blue sock."
  2. Wait: after a question, count to five or ten; your child may need time.
  3. Expand: if your child says "car", say "red car goes". Repeat without correcting.
  4. Offer choices: "Milk or water?" and reward every attempt, sound or point.
  5. Share books: point at pictures, copy sounds, let your child turn pages.
  6. Sing and rhyme: repeated words stick more easily with rhythm.

Games to encourage talking

Sound imitation

Make animal and vehicle sounds together: "moo", "beep beep", "woof". Celebrate each imitation without pushing.

Where did it go?

Hide a toy under a cloth and ask "Where is the bear?" Say "There!" when found. Repeated simple words are fun.

Bag of toys

Put four or five toys in a bag. Your child pulls one out, you name it and add an action ("ball, bounce bounce bounce"). Leave a gap so your child can say or point.

Toy phone

Say "hello" into a toy phone. Taking turns, listening and answering are the base of early conversation.

Shop and kitchen play

Play shopping with real or toy food. Short requests like "apple please" and "more" fit naturally.

Picture story cards

Lay out three picture cards and invent a story. If your child cannot find a word, they can point and you supply it.

A small guide by age

AgeGame exampleFocus
1 to 2Peekaboo, sound imitation, songsListening, imitation
2 to 3Bag of toys, shop, toy phoneNames, short requests
3 to 4Picture cards, "what is it doing?"Short sentences, Q and A

These ages are not fixed. For children under three, watch out for small parts that can be swallowed, and always play under adult supervision.

Speech activities during the day

Breakfast, bath time, dressing and walks are natural chances for repeated words. A song at bath time or a routine phrase such as "Ready, steady, go!" gives your child a predictable pattern. Get down to eye level so your child can see your mouth. Keep sentences short and do not fire too many questions.

Avoid pressure

Repeatedly demanding "say car!" can make a child pull back. Create the chance, wait, reward any attempt and let your child find the word at their own pace. Share simple methods with grandparents and carers so the environment stays consistent, and give priority to any home exercises a therapist gives you.

Do screens hold back speech?

We do not give fixed screen minutes; check current guidance from child health organisations and your paediatrician. For young children, face-to-face talk, songs and screen-free play come first, since back-and-forth conversation matters for language. Frequently asked questions

Will games fix a speech delay?

Games are not a treatment. They can create a supportive environment. For assessment and any therapy, see a speech and language therapist.

My child hears two languages. Will they talk later?

Every child differs, and children in bilingual homes may progress differently at times. If you are worried, ask your paediatrician.

Should I correct every mistake?

Gently repeating the correct form is usually softer than correcting. A specialist may advise something different for your child.

Can I just wait and see?

If you are worried, booking a check is usually the safest route.
